Drake Vox Relay Connector

By Tom Taylor

Just last week I made a cable with two homemade vox plugs on either end to connect an AC-4 to an L-4B. The plugs fit and work perfectly. Here are the steps I used:

  • Buy 3/32 inch brass tubing from a hobby store
  • Cut 7/8 inch sections of the tube with a Dremel chucked with a cut-off wheel
  • Sand one end of the pins slightly rounded
  • Solder a wire into the other end of each pin
  • Cut a piece of plexiglass to 1/4 inch x 3/4 inch
  • Drill two 3/32 inch holes in the plexiglass spaced the correct distance apart
  • Insert the two pins into the holes - the rounded ends of the pins should stick out about 3/8 inch
  • Tape a 2.5 inch strip of electrical tape around the perimeter of the plexiglass base - the wires will be sticking out
  • Clamp the base in a vice and pour 5 minute epoxy into the area contained by the electrical tape
  • Wait for epoxy to dry
  • Remove electrical tape
  • Enjoy!
